If the truth were...

Featured in collaborative philosophical video essay (23min) | 2022
Original live performance 30 min

Location: ISVW grounds in Leusden, the Netherlands

As part of Tim de Mey’s fellowship with the International School of Philosophy, I was commissioned to create an artwork that would feature in a philosophical video essay on truth. The video essay If truth was a witch… she would always rise to the surface, is a joint production of Tim de Mey, Annelies Verbeke, Saartje van Camp, myself and filmmaker Stefan de Graaff.

In edition to the performative sculpture, Saartje van Camp and I worked together to create the closing theme. Inspired by my initial video sketches and the content of the essay Saartje composed and recorded the song and I created the music video. The video is composed of several layers of drawings, the forest and the three artist that feature in the video essay.

Etalage Performance

Performatieve sculptuur in etalage Marijke de Pous afstudeerwerk / graduation work performance by Marijke de Pous videostill

40 min live performance, 22 minute video registration & C-print on dibond | 2004

Location: Oudegracht shop Window, Utrecht, the Netherlands

The registration of this performance piece was one of the works in my graduation show from the HKU. As with my other graduation projects, I purposefully chose the registration to be the final work to be presented to a larger audience. In this case a 22min videoloop and a printed photo. At exhibits a second layer of spectators - walking by or standing still to look at the scene- became part of the work. Watch an excerpt below.

Work in progress

“Verstilling, traagheid, tijd nemen en ‘het denken’, komen voor in de ruimte of juist afwezigheid van ruimte tussen muren, zuilen en het lichaam. Het beeld is zorgvuldig ontworpen, draagt echter een verrassend frisse eerlijkheid en kracht die op zichzelf staat.”

- Danielle Liebeskind, White Suit Projections
