Like a dancer expressing emotion through movement or a sculptor capturing presence with one pose perpetually still, I like to use the body as a tool for direct expression. Amidst mountains, fields and in my studio, I dance with landscape and materials to explore our emotional and physical ties to the earth and to each other. 

When striking a pose, eyes closed, holding my breath, I can feel how the moment stretches around itself. At once introspective, turned away, it is also when we are most powerful, able to create something new in the world.

While working I playfully move between drawing, performative gesture, sculpture and photography, an ongoing invitation to collaborate with the unexpected.

Topics that spark my curiosity and thus seep into my work are more-than-human agency, creative power, entangled forms of resistance, care and radical belonging. My embodied way of working and the use of natural materials such as paper, charcoal, clay and graphite, allow for an intimate connection between content and process.

The encounters between body and other often hold ambiguities and contradictions. Are we witnessing inner strength or turmoil? Lightness or a burden? Silence or shout? Rather than resolving these tensions, I am intrigued by their juxtaposition, allowing things to be both, stretching the space of possibility and meaning.

Mijn werk begeeft zich op het kruispunt tussen tekenen, fotografie, performance en sculpturale interventie. Door speelse verkenning breng ik mijn lichaam in dialoog met mijn fysieke omgeving en de materialen die ik gebruik. Al makend verken ik onze lichamelijke en emotionele relatie tot de aarde en de tegenstrijdigheden die daarin besloten liggen. Enerzijds bron creatieve kracht en verbinding. Aan de andere kant is diezelfde relatie ook diep verstoord door de dominante systemen van exploitatie en onderdrukking waar wij zelf ook deel van zijn.

Mijn belichaamde manier van werken en het gebruik van natuurlijke materialen zoals houtskool, grafiet en klei resulteert in expressieve beelden, waarin inhoud en proces intiem met elkaar zijn verbonden.

Al dansend met landschap en materialen breng ik de radicale ambiguïteit van ons menselijke bestaan in beeld en in ervaring. Een zoektocht ook, naar intimiteit en verbinding met dat wat anders, onbekend en meerduidig is, en manieren om samen te werken met het onverwachte.

Hoe voelen we ons thuis op een beschadigde aarde? Hoe dragen we zorg voor elkaar en de aarde? Op het spel staat telkens ons vermogen om ons vrij te voelen ondanks beperkt, licht ondanks wat zwaar weegt, hoopvol terwijl hopeloos, verbonden te midden van ontwrichting. 

Kunst kan ons hieraan herinneren: het één sluit het ander niet uit. Er zit schoonheid, troost en tomeloze veranderkracht in onze capaciteit om ons telkens opnieuw en meerduidig te verhouden tot dat wat er is.
